College Baseball Preview – Oklahoma At Texas Tech
For the first time this season the Oklahoma Sooners will enter a baseball weekend as an unranked team. Deservedly so though after riding a five-game losing streak into this week that included a weekend sweep at the hands of unranked Texas. Now, after beating Air Force in both games of last Tuesday’s double header to snap the losing streak, Oklahoma is heading to Lubbock to look for their first conference win.
Head Coach Sunny Galloway decided to make some major changes to the weekend pitching rotation beginning with inserting Jordan John into the rotation as the Friday pitcher. John has been Oklahoma’s most reliable pitcher this season. Coming in as a middle reliever he has pitched 29.1 innings and has a team low 2.76 ERA and a 3-3 record. He has struck out 28 batters this season while only allowing 26 hits.
John will be squaring off against Duke von Schamann who has a 2.62 era and a 2-3 record on the season. If his name sounds vaguely familiar its because he is the son of legendary Oklahoma kicker Uwe von Schamann who is responsible for one of the greatest moments in Sooner football history.
Duke von Schamann leads the team in innings pitched with 34.1 under his belt. He too has struck out more batters (26) than he has given up hits (25).
Jonathan Gray is Oklahoma’s Saturday starter once again. He has a 2-3 record and a 5.88 ERA but seems to have found his stride, so to speak, in recent weeks. His six starts this season are the most among the pitching rotation. He’ll be faced against Tech’s John Neely who is 2-1 and has a 3.29 ERA on the season. Neely has seven appearances this season but has only put in 13.2 innings of work. This will be his third start of the season.
No starter has been listed for Texas Tech for Sunday’s final game but the Sooners are moving Dillon Overton from the Friday starter to the Sunday starter. Overton’s 37.2 innings pitched are the most among the Sooner staff. He has earned a team best 3-0 record by striking out 34 batters and maintaining a 3.11 ERA.
Here’s where I get a little worried in this series though. Led by Scott LeJeune the Red Raiders are tops in the Big XII in team batting average at .312 and the team that currently has the worst batting average in the conference just swept the Sooners in Norman last weekend. LeJeune is batting a ridiculous .388 on the season. Oklahoma is currently fifth in team batting average at .280.
The Red Raiders are third in the Big XII with a team ERA of 3.25 while the Sooners are eighth at 4.92.
First pitch in the series is slated for 6:30 pm (CST) tonight.

Work begins on London, Ontario Carpenters? union training centre
Work is underway on a new 25,000-square-foot training centre for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 1946 in London, Ontario.
The $8 million centre will also serve as the administration offices for the local, says Kevin Hoy, Union Coordinator and Local president.
?It will be about 25,000 square feet, 10 times bigger than the centre we have now,? said Hoy of the building which is located on Highbury Ave near Highway 401.

It will have dedicated areas for all three union-incorporated trades, carpentry, drywall and flooring as well as workshop areas.
?We?ll have training in everything from forms and trim, to drywalling techniques to carpet, tiles and so on,? he said.
With the new space, he hopes to boost the amount of trainees able to go through the centre from 400 to 500 to close to a 1,000 a year.
?We?re also working with local schools to provide safety training for their shop programs,? said Hoy.
The Local has long had a relationship with the schools and he hopes to invigorate that connect with the benefits of the new facility.

The centre is slated to be open in December, he said, lighting speed considering they only broke ground officially Feb. 29.
Architect McMichael Ruth of architects Tillmann Ruth Robinson said the Local did not cut corners in commissioning the design which takes it well beyond the standard slab and steel siding facility.
?The atrium is two storeys with a staircase and a glass curtain wall right at the front where you walk in,? he said. ?Also, there are glue-laminate exposed beams with wood siding where there is not glass.?
There is also a green roof, with a vegetative area and a light reflecting membrane expanse.
?It?s quite state of the art,? he said.

AUGUSTA, Ga. More than 75 percent of fourth-graders in urban and rural settings have measurable levels of a nicotine breakdown product in their saliva that documents their second-hand smoke exposure, researchers report.
A study of 428 fourth graders and 453 parents in seven rural and seven urban Georgia schools also showed that the urban children were more likely to be smokers 14.9 percent versus 6.6 percent. Additionally urban children have the most exposure to smokers: 79.6 percent versus 75.3 percent, according to findings presented to the 15th World Conference on Tobacco or Health March 20-24 in Singapore.
“It’s bad news,” said Dr. Martha S. Tingen, Co-Director of Georgia Health Sciences University’s Child Health Discovery Institute and Interim Program Leader of the GHSU Cancer Center’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program. “Smoking is one of the major causes of low-birth weight infants, it increases the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by 10 times, increases breathing problems, asthma-related hospital admissions, ear and upper-respiratory infections, yet all these kids are living in a smoking environment.”
The findings are another reminder to pediatricians to talk with parents and children about smoking habits during every checkup and to researchers that more community-based studies are needed to give parents and children alike the skills they need to avoid or stop smoking, Tingen said. They also indicate that geography and health disparities need to figure heavily into tailoring solutions.
In the study group, researchers found children in the rural areas were more likely to be white and living with both parents; children in urban settings tended to be poorer, live with one parent, receive health care at community health clinics and have a parent who smoked.
At GHSU, young pediatricians such as Dr. Ketarah Robinson learn early to be vigilant and forthright about major health issues such as smoking and obesity with the parents and children they see in clinic, asking tough questions about whether the kids are getting pressured to smoke and if they’ve already given in. Like the children in the study, some kids say “yes” as early as age 10. Then doctors such as Robinson give them readily discernible reasons not to. “At that age we give them more concrete things like: Do you want to stink and have yellow teeth?” said Robinson, Co-Chief Resident in Pediatrics at GHS Children’s Medical Center. Robinson and second-year Medical College of Georgia student Prathyusha Mididoddi will present the rural versus urban findings in Singapore. Tingen, who holds the Charles W. Linder Endowed Chair in Pediatrics, is first author.
Mididoddi echoed the fact that a significant percentage of kids getting regular smoke exposure is both “scary” and preventable. She and Robinson agree the findings re-emphasize the need for thorough social histories to get a clear picture of where and how children live.
“At any age, cigarette smoke really affects kids, whether it’s a grandmother they visit with on weekends or a parent they are with every day,” Robinson said. Now in her fourth year of training, Robinson already has seen educational efforts help parents stop smoking or at least keep them from smoking around their children. But she’s also had a few patients start smoking.
Amazingly, some of those young smokers might already have trouble breathing. In a related study of 2,636 eighth-to-10th graders in four rural Georgia schools, GHSU researchers also found that nearly 40 percent of white females and nearly 27 percent of white boys with wheezing, coughing asthma symptoms said they smoked. There were other unhealthy indicators: children with an actual asthma diagnosis whether or not they had symptoms had a higher percentage of body fat as measured by a higher body mass index.
The study looked at children with no asthma diagnosis, a diagnosis and symptoms, a diagnosis and no symptoms and active symptoms but no actual diagnosis in a 30 day-period. While smoke exposure is bad for anyone, it’s at the top of the list of asthma triggers. The asthma study, along with another study yielding encouraging news that home-based intervention can help black parents feel confident about their ability to make their home tobacco-free, are being presented as posters during the tobacco research meeting.
The study compared general health education to parents learning life skills geared at improving communication, emphasizing their strength as role models and fundamentals such as best parenting practices. The study was in a mix of urban and rural parents who were largely black and an average age of 38. Parents who got life skills training significantly increased their self-efficacy.
“It’s an expectation that we are not going to smoke and nobody is going to smoke in our house,” said Tingen, who has been taking these types of educational programs to schools and communities for years. “It’s an expectation that when you grow up, you are not going to smoke.” Tingen hopes this type of positive life-skills training will one day be available to children and parents in every school.

My super nice bird all of a sudden turns mean? | Ask Something
Well my pet bird who is a girl lovebird was always nice but for some reason she has been very mean lately my hands are full of bite marks now!!!First she would let me grab her with no prob,2nd she would bite me if i tried to grab her while she was in this coconut,third She bites me all the time now!!!I wonder if it has anything to do with mating season cause she does have a male bird with her in the cage. Thanks alot for ur help
